More than an Affiliate: Acting Like a Business Owner

business ownerIf you’re building Income for Life with GDI, then you’re one of our valued affiliates. You may identify yourself as a GDI affiliate, but you’re also much more than that. The affiliate opportunity with GDI gives you a chance to run your own business. We offer guidelines and assistance, but you have the freedom to run your business any way you like. For just $10 per month, GDI is a business opportunity like no other. Here are a few tips to change your view from affiliate to business owner.

Ownership

To successfully build a business, you must have ownership of it. This goes beyond actual financial ownership and into the mental aspect of business. You need to own every aspect of your business from your reputation to your customer service. It’s up to you whether your business succeeds or not, so put ownership on every decision, success and failure. When you view the opportunity as something you own, you’re more likely to stick with it and succeed. Use the approach that you are your business.

Availability and Investment

If you know someone who owns a business, you know they essentially on call 24 hours a day. When you invest in something to make a living or even just extra money, you need to be available at any time to make it work. While you might not be getting calls at 5 am about a messed up shipment, you may need to take some of your personal time to assist your downline members or clear up an issue with a commission.  Set aside time each day for GDI, but also know something may pop up outside of those hours and it’s your duty to address it. Time invested in your business is time well spent.

Long View

No one starts a business with the intention of shutting it down two months later, so why take that approach to GDI? Successful affiliates will tell you that if they quit the first time they felt like it, they wouldn’t be where they are today. Look at your time with GDI as a long haul, not a chance to get rich quick. Set long term goals and mark down milestones to ensure you’re on the right track towards Income for Life.

The First Sign Up

If you’re part of the affiliate program, the first sign up is cause for celebration. With GDI’s Learning Bonus, you can celebrate with cash is your sign up converts to an affiliate. No matter when it happens, your first sign up is cause for celebration. You may get one within the first week, or maybe it will take months.leader2

Some of GDI’s most successful affiliates had slow starts, unsure of whether to stay with the program. Sticking with it allowed them to be more successful than they imagined, securing a spot on the Leader Boards again and again. So don’t be discouraged if that first sign up doesn’t happen right away. When it does happen, it’s time to celebrate and begin work for the next one!

Becoming Your Own Boss

As an affiliate marketer you are your own boss. This means answering only to yourself when it comes to scheduling, income, and the like. It’s something to take seriously so that you stay on task and don’t go too easy on yourself. Here are a few ways to accomplish this.

Schedule Reviews

Reviews with your boss are commonplace in the standard work setting for good reason. As your own boss, this isn’t something you should get rid of. Reviews help to keep you on track and highlight areas that you are excelling in as well as those that need work. Schedule a review for yourself every few months. You are the boss and the employee for this scenario. Do a self review and identify areas you need work in as well as those that deserve praise. Save your reviews so you can look back at the end of the year to see your progress and set new goals.

Create Office Hours

Teachers, mentors, and bosses have office hours. These are scheduled blocks of time where they can assist their students, mentees, and employees and can be very helpful to everyone. Consider something like this for your downline members. Set aside a few hours each week to connect with your team and assist them as needed. You may be your own boss, but affiliate marketing is still a team endeavor; don’t neglect this aspect!

Think Big Picture

The thought of being your own boss, if only part time, is exciting and liberating. All of the freedom that comes with being your own boss may make it easy to get a little lazy and put off responsibilities of building your business. To avoid these traps, think “big picture.” This means envisioning what your hope to get from being an affiliate marketer and working each day to get it. As your own boss you’re half way there, now you need to build the income!
