The Secret to Networking Successfully

networking successfully

We’ve shared many times on this blog about the power of networking. If you’re like many people, you may read these blog postings and shudder a bit because you don’t like networking with people or it doesn’t come naturally to you. Have no fear, you’re not alone, many people don’t like networking.

Now that you know you’re not alone, you still have to network! But now you can use the fact that others don’t like it either in your favor. Here’s how you can use that little secret to begin networking successfully:

Move Forward

Not many people enjoy networking, now that you know that, move forward. You still have to network to make important connections. Make light of how awkward networking can be when you make connections, then move on and talk about your life, your work, what you have in common. The beginning of the conversation is the worst part, so know that, own it and move on.

Make Others Feel at Ease

If most people around you feel just as uncomfortable as you, try to put them at ease. Reach out to the people in the room who look anxious and ask them about themselves and their work. These people have lots to offer but are just as shy as you. Take the chance and get to know the person in the room who is not so talkative, you never know what kind of ideas they have.

Hang Out in the Right Places

At conferences and events, there are natural places where people congregate, like the food lines, the bar lines or the cocktail tables. If you’re nervous about going up to someone first, stake claim at one of these places. As rooms fill up and so do lines, people will most likely begin talking to you and if not, its the perfect place to break the ice and comment on the long lines or great food.

Nothing to Lose

Though networking isn’t fun to start with, what’s the worst that could happen? If you don’t connect with people, you won’t build your network. If you do connect with people, chances are you’ll get a business card and someone to reach out to. So take a chance and start a conversation!

Why You Should Use Facebook Groups for Network Building

Facebook Groups for Network Building

Facebook is a powerful marketing tool with many features to help you succeed. While most marketing is done in the form of a simple post or image, Facebook events, pages, and lists can help you to market and connect more effectively. Learn how to use Facebook groups for Network Building and building your business.

Facebook Events

Facebook events are an easy way to connect with and grow your network, while demonstrating the strength of relationships. Facebook Events don’t have to be for an in-person event, they can be for a Skype session, a conference call, or even just a brainstorm session on Facebook. To create an event, find “Create Event” listed under Events on the left hand side navigation in Facebook. As you build your event, you can add the important details like date, time and location, but there is one other feature to pay special attention to: Privacy.

At first glance, this seems like a simple tool to decide who to invite, but the privacy settings are key to your marketing. The options for privacy are public, open invite, guests and friends, or invite only. Choose your privacy option based on how you want to market your event.

If you want as many people as possible to join your event, choose Public. Just know with this option that people you do not know now have information about your event and may attend. If you’d like to spread the word about your event though people you’ve already invited, choose Open Invite. This option allows all friends of a guest to see the event information and any guest with an invite from you to then invite an unlimited number of their friends to attend. If you’d like to keep your event even smaller, but leave the option open for more guests, choose Friends and Guests. This means that only those invited to the party will see the event information, but those invitees do have the option to invite their friends. Lastly, Invite Only is a good option for a conference call with your downline or any event that you would prefer is a small private group. Only those who are invited will see event information and those invitees do not have the option to invite anyone else.

Facebook Lists

Lots of people have more friends than they can keep track of on Facebook. And because of Facebook’s algorithm, this means you may be missing important posts from people in your network. To ensure you see posts from team members, your upline, and potential prospects, take advantage of Facebook lists. These lists give preference to what shows up in your Facebook feed, but also let you see all the members of a list with one click of the mouse. To create a list, navigate to Friends and select More in the left hand navigation on Facebook. You may notice Facebook has already created a few lists for you based on commonalities of people on your friends list. To create your own curated list, choose Create List, name your, list and then begin typing the names of people you would like to include in this list. To access the list when you’re done, simply go to the same Friends area and your list should appear.

Facebook Groups

Though not as popular as they once were, Facebook Groups are a powerful tool. Much like Lists, Groups allow you to connect with people who matter most to you. Consider creating a Facebook group for your team, business, or people interested in your business. To launch your own group, navigate to Groups on the left hand side navigation and choose, Create Groups. You will now have the option to set your group as Open, Closed, or Secret. Open groups mean anyone can join, closed groups mean you can send invites and people can request to join them, and secret groups means no one can join unless the person who created the group invites them. Consider creating a private group for your downline or a public group for people interested in your business. Groups allow for better visibility because, like lists, when you add a group, it will appear in the left hand navigation with its own icon.

3 Traditional Marketing Techniques That Still Make Sense Today

Traditional Marketing techniques

The best tactics for marketing a product or business seem to change everyday thanks to the internet and our constantly connected world. It can be overwhelming trying to keep up to date on all the new marketing trends and platforms you should be using. Though daunting, it is wise to stay up to date on marketing trends, but you can relax knowing that some long-used marketing tactics are still powerful and necessary today as ever. Read on for a few traditional marketing techniques that are still effective in our increasingly digital world.

Networking Events

Believe it or not, there are still some people who are successful in their business but aren’t on Facebook. Maybe they have a social media presence, but it’s run by someone else. The point is, some successful business people aren’t online as often as you, and that means if you do all of your marketing and network building online you’re missing them. Even if you connect with some people online, nothing can replace the power of building a relationship face to face.

Networking events are great for two reasons: you can build strong relationships in person and you can connect with people you may have never found online. Where can you find networking events? Check with your Chamber of Commerce to find out about networking events in your hometown, or search sites like Meetup.com or Eventbrite.com to find these kind of events near you. Conferences are also a great way to network. Conferences often feature talks during the day and networking opportunities during lunch or cocktail hour. Search for a conference related to your industry to learn new things and connect with new people. After you’ve done all this, how do you ensure you’ve built a solid connection with someone and they can reach out again? Business cards.

Business Cards

Business cards are not outdated, despite the best efforts on online resume and networking sites like LinkedIn. Though you can connect online easily with your smartphone, it’s still easier and more tangible to have and handout business cards. Have cards on you at all times, networking events are important, but you never know when you might strike up a conversation with a potential customer and team member at the mechanic or salon. Share your business cards to keep these connections.

Going for Coffee

Don’t worry if you don’t drink coffee. Going for coffee with a potential customer is just a great chance to connect and share ideas and see how you can help them. If you’re trying to seal the deal with someone in your area, consider taking them out for coffee instead of following up on the phone. Conversely, this is a great first step in marketing and networking. Reach out to someone you’d like to learn more from or have join your team and ask if you can take them out for coffee. Few people will turn down a free cappuccino and now you have a great chance to build a new business relationship.

Word of Mouth

Sites like Yelp, Google+ and Foursquare offer the digital equivalent of the most powerful form of marketing there is: Word of mouth marketing. Word of mouth marketing is when someone recommends their favorite business with nothing to gain from it. You then consider this business because you trust that friend. That’s why it’s so powerful; you already have a relationship with the friend who frequents a business so now you’re one step closer to choosing that business. But how do you build word of mouth marketing? Providing excellent service is one way. Many customers will share your business if they’re happy. Offering incentives like referral discounts for new customers can also help. Lastly, if you’re customers express to you that they’re happy, ask them to share the positive sentiment with their friends. You never know what you can get just by asking.
